What are the entry requirements?
Usually an upper second-class honours MSci or MPhys degree in Physics or a related subject (or international equivalent) is required. Please see our programme entry page for further details.
Should I contact potential supervisors before applying?
You don’t need to know your proposed area of research before you apply. During year 1 the taught courses will help you understand the breadth of the Condensed Matter Physics research area and you will then choose a PhD project and supervisor later in year 1.
When is the deadline for applications?
Applications for 2018/19 are now open, we will be updating the page with our interview dates and deadlines soon.
When is your next open day?
Our University Postgraduate Open day in Bristol is usually held in November. Please see our visits and open days page for more information.
Our CDT-CMP Open day in Bath is usually held in December. Please see our visits and open days page for more information.
I can’t make your open day. Can I come and visit?
We will invite suitable applicants to visit us for an interview. Overseas applicants may be interviewed via Skype.
English is not my first language. Is there an entry requirement for the standard of English?
Further information on this is available in our CDT-CMP admissions statement.
How much are the tuition fees?
Fees for 2017/18 are set to be £4,185 for UK and EU students and £19,700 for overseas students. These fees are provisional, per annum and subject to annual increase. Further information on fees and funding can be found on the funding postgraduate study page.
How many studentships do you have to offer?
Up to 12 studentships are available for September 2017. These are funded either by EPSRC, the Universities of Bristol and Bath or our industrial and facility partners. These studentships cover tuition fees and a stipend of approximately £14,553 per year for living expenses (increases annually).
We have a limited number of scholarships for EU students. Non-EU students may be funded through University or external scholarships.
How do I apply for funding from CDT-CMP?
There is no need to apply specifically for CDT-CMP funding. If you are offered a place in CDT-CMP and are eligible for funding you will automatically considered for a funded place.
Am I eligible for a studentship?
You can find out by looking at the EPSRC eligibility criteria.
If I am not eligible for a CDT-CMP studentship, how can I find funding?
There may be other country-specific scholarships available. Please take a look at our awards, bursaries and scholarships page for further information.
The CDT is joint between Bristol and Bath Universities – where would I be based?
The first year of taught courses and lectures will be held for the first two terms in both Bristol and Bath. Once you choose a research project for your PhD (years 2-4) you will be based wherever your research project is (i.e. Bristol or Bath). Bristol and Bath are 10 miles apart and it’s a short commute via train. You will be reimbursed for CDT-CMP-related travel costs between Bristol and Bath.
I have a great idea for my research project. Can I skip the taught component and make a start straight away?
Year 1 of the programme will provide you with a good grounding in condensed matter physics, as well as providing you with transferable skills and physics techniques training, so you will find this time useful and interesting and it will prepare you for the research part of the programme from year 2 onwards. If you would like to take a PhD with no taught section you should apply for a non-CDT PhD in Physics.
What is a Research Placement?
This is a period during year 1 where you will have the opportunity to work with a research group in Bristol or Bath, or with an industry or facility partner, on a small project. This could lead onto your main research project in years 2-4.
Can I enrol for just the taught component to receive a different qualification?
Because the CDT-CMP programme is a 4 year PhD it’s not possible to apply for year 1 alone.
Which industrial and facility organisations are involved with the CDT-CMP?
We have many partners, please see our Partners page for a full list.
